Occupational Therapy is founded on the knowledge that engaging in the art of "doing" can change our brain and physical function. Assisting people to do the activities they need to, want to, and have to do is what occupational therapy is all about.
Occupational therapy interventions can be very diverse, ranging from teaching someone how to get dressed, how to catch a bus, how to produce better handwriting, completing modifications to the home, or writing a report to get someone a complex piece of eassistive technology.
Occupational therapists also assist people to improve their physical movements, thinking skills, wellbeing, communication, social engagement and to manage anxiety through the use of activities such as music making, exercise, painting, drawing, cooking and horse riding experiences.
Engaging in complex activities involving both brain and body function - such as drawing, painting, participating in sports, cooking and playing music, literally changes our brain structure! Of course there are so many other benefits gained from engaging in enjoyable activities including increased self esteem, confidence and limiting screen time.
I also get to enjoy participating in such interesting activities while delivering a diverse range of activities and occupational therapy interventions to both children and adults! It is extra important to me that we participate in enjoyable and complex activities in settings which provide inspiration and familiarisation with many sites within our local Yeppoon community.
